In the following video, Ritti Soncco and Mark Klawikowski explain how the workshop "Children of Roots" is set up,
and show exclusive Behind the Scenes footage of the workshop.
Children of Roots is the story of the small South American potato, Ochoa, looking for his home. Because a potato only has roots on its mind, Ochoa interviews people on the subject of living in a foreign country and learning to adapt. A puppet-documentary about roots, integration and the quest for personal identity.
In the Film Workshop, we will be producing a sequel to Children of Roots. The sequel shows Ochoa now on a quest to find like-minded people: international people. He wants to find out more about their experiences and opinions on having their roots and home in many different countries around the world.
The Students Will Learn:
- the basics of filmmaking
- being part of a professional film crew
- the basics of puppeteering
- how to lead an interview
- to give poised responses while standing in front of a camera
- to consider the opportunities and difficulties of having many cultures and international roots
A Student's Opinion of the Workshop:
"I think that the Film Project was a lot of fun and a great experience because we got to find out what it’s like to be part of a film. It was also good because it got me thinking more about my own culture and other cultures. I think the film project was awesome and I would love to do something like this again."

Our Experience:
Ritti Soncco is a Peruvian-German writer/filmmaker. After taking several courses on filmmaking in London, she worked for SWR, a German television with nation-wide viewers, as sound technician and camera assistant. Like the children who participate in the workshop, Ritti Soncco is a third culture kid herself, and therefore understands the problems and virtues this heritage entails. She dedicates her work to raising awareness on roots, multiculturality and the phenomenon of the "third culture kid".
Mark Klawikowski is a professional puppeteer, artist and filmmaker from Germany. He is the director of Theater Klawikowski, a puppet and improvisation theater for children and adults. He creates all puppets specifically for the films himself.
Our work with Children of Roots has taken us to international communities in Germany, Holland and Peru. We are both fluent in English and German; Ritti Soncco is fluent in Spanish.
